The Servant Who Was Forgiven—But Refused to Forgive
Matthew 18:21–35
Jesus tells a disturbing story about mercy gone wrong.
A servant owes his master a debt so massive it could never be repaid in a lifetime. Facing ruin, he falls down and begs for patience. Instead of punishment, the master does the unthinkable—he cancels the entire debt.
The servant walks free.
But freedom doesn’t change him.
Soon after, he meets a fellow servant who owes him a small amount. Unlike the mercy he received, he shows none. He grabs the man, demands payment, ignores his pleas, and has him thrown into prison.
When the master hears what happened, the story turns severe. The forgiveness is revoked. The servant is judged—not for the debt he owed, but for the mercy he refused to pass on.
Jesus’ point is sharp and uncomfortable:
Grace is not meant to stop with us.
Forgiveness received must become forgiveness practiced.
This story is rarely emphasized because it confronts us directly. It shows that faith is revealed not by how much we are forgiven—but by how we forgive others.
