Courtney Smallbone, wife of For King & Country’s Luke Smallbone, is sharing what she calls a miraculous moment when her infant son Leo suddenly died and came back to life after prayer.
Speaking on CBN’s “Heaven Meets Earth” podcast, Smallbone recalled putting her 8-week-old son down for a nap when she sensed something was wrong. “I hear this voice say, ‘Go check on Leo, and don’t believe what you’re going to see,’” she said.
When she reached him, she found him “blue and gray, cold, sunken in chest, and blood all over his face and limp.” As her husband called 911, she attempted CPR and began praying. “I just started praying in tongues,” she said.
With Leo lying unresponsive, she whispered, “Only You can do this. Only You can do this.” She says the answer was immediate.
“Literally in that moment, like his chest expands, he starts crying. He turns pink. His eyes go from foggy to clear,” she recalled. “It’s like a, like a on, like on, off, on, off.”
At the hospital, doctors diagnosed Leo with craniosynostosis, a skull deformity requiring surgery. But Smallbone said her fear had lifted. “If God wants to, He’s in charge,” she said, describing a deep surrender: “They’re not mine. I’m stewarding this life, but they’re all Yours.”
Now 8 years old, Leo is thriving. Courtney says he once told her he “sat on Jesus’s lap” and saw her late grandfather, whom he had never met. “Papaw told me I had to go back, but he said I’ll see you at the end of the world when the dead are raised,” Leo told her.
Reflecting on the experience, Smallbone said, “When you see the glory of God, I’m just like, ‘Nothing’s impossible.’” She added, “I’m dead without You. I can’t do anything without the presence of God, nor do I want to.”
