American missionary physician Dr. Peter Stafford had spent years treating Ebola patients on the front lines of one of the world’s most dangerous outbreak zones in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Then, not long ago, he tested positive for the very virus he had been fighting — and was immediately evacuated.
He was never there alone.
His wife, Rebekah, is also a doctor, serving side by side with him in the field. Their four children lived with them on that restless, uncertain ground. Now, this family is facing the moment they never wanted to come.
When Christian leader Franklin Graham heard the news, he reached out to Rebekah right away. He then took to social media, calling on Christians around the world to pray — for Peter, and for the entire family. “I told her we would be praying for Peter and their family,” he wrote.
This couple did not end up here by chance. They trained through Samaritan’s Purse’s medical missions program, and when it was over, they chose to stay — in the most dangerous place, where the need was greatest. The place where Peter fell is the very place he gave everything to serve.
Health officials are now urgently tracing contacts in the region, working to contain the outbreak before it spreads further. Meanwhile, Christians across the globe have been flooding social media with prayers and messages of support for the Stafford family.
Join us in praying for Peter, Rebekah, and their four children — for healing, protection, and strength in the days ahead.
