Southern Baptist Theological Seminary President Al Mohler sharply condemned Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear for invoking the Bible to justify LGBT-related policies, calling the approach “stupid” and warning that theological liberalism has become a rival religion to biblical Christianity.
Mohler reacted to Beshear’s appearance on The View, where the governor said his vetoes were guided by “the Golden Rule” and the parable of the Good Samaritan. Beshear told the hosts, “Most of the decisions I make are based on that Golden Rule that says we love our neighbor as ourself,” adding that his faith taught him that “all children are children of God,” which led him to veto what he called “the nastiest piece of anti-LGBTQ legislation” in Kentucky.
Mohler responded that Beshear’s faith claims reduce Christianity to selective moral slogans. “You are looking here at two different rival religions,” Mohler said. “You have historic, orthodox, biblical Christianity, and you have theological liberalism and whatever it produces next.” He argued that this approach “cuts the Bible down to size,” ignoring Genesis, creation order, and historic Christian teaching.
Mohler suggested Beshear was referring to Senate Bill 150, which banned puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for minors and was later enacted over the governor’s veto, as well as other vetoed measures restricting taxpayer-funded transgender procedures. He noted that Beshear has repeatedly used Christian language to defend progressive positions on LGBT issues and abortion, including appeals to the Golden Rule at the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
Pro-life groups, including The Family Foundation, accused Beshear of “completely twisting the Scripture,” arguing that biblical love seeks human flourishing and cannot justify abortion or irreversible medical procedures for children. Critics also cited Beshear’s past remarks using the Nativity story to rebuke Republicans, which some lawmakers called “outright blasphemous.”
Mohler concluded that current cultural battles over sexuality reveal a deeper divide: Christianity grounded in Scripture versus a new, evolving moral religion that borrows biblical language while rejecting biblical authority.
