Nate Bargatze’s Clean Comedy Calling

Comedian Nate Bargatze has built one of the most successful careers in stand-up by choosing to stay clean — a decision he says is rooted in his faith and his desire to honor God.

Bargatze, who had the highest-grossing comedy tour of 2024 and recently hosted “Saturday Night Live,” is known for creating comedy the whole family can enjoy. He describes his approach as living out the belief that “I am second” — second to God, second to family, and second to the audience.

“You live to serve,” he said, calling his work “very much a calling in that aspect.”

Raised in a Christian home in Nashville, Tennessee, Bargatze says his material is drawn from everyday life and is not driven by ego. “It can’t be about me,” he explained. “Because if it was about me, I wouldn’t be able to handle it… what I believe, it’s on God.”

The 46-year-old intentionally writes content that grandparents, parents and children can all experience together. “I just want to make something that all of them can be in the room together,” he said, noting that many grandmothers attend his shows and enjoy them.

Though staying clean set him apart in an industry often known for edgier material, Bargatze said he never wanted it to feel like a gimmick. Instead, he focused on being consistently funny and reliable, which opened doors for late-night appearances and larger platforms.

Looking back on nearly two decades in comedy, he credits God for guiding his path. “God has a path, and I’m just here to follow the path,” he said. Trusting that God will open the right doors, Bargatze added, “I’m grateful to get to be the one that was chosen to be this vessel.”
