French striker Olivier Giroud has spoken openly about his Christian faith, explaining why he chooses to express it publicly throughout his football career. In an interview, Giroud pointed to Psalm 23 — a verse he has tattooed on his body — saying, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” He explained that the tattoo is a constant reminder that he truly believes in God and trusts Him for protection and guidance: “I have faith, I truly believe in God… He is there to protect me and watch over me. It reassures me.”
Giroud said his faith was passed down primarily through his mother, who took him to church as a child. “It was my mom who transmitted that faith to me,” he said. Prayer, he explained, is a daily practice, both in life and in football. During difficult moments — especially in major tournaments — he prays for strength and the ability to help his team: “When I pray, I ask the Lord to give me the strength to help my team win.” He also described offering short, spontaneous prayers during matches, calling them “flash prayers.”
When he scores, Giroud often points to the sky as a gesture of gratitude, explaining that he believes God has a plan for everyone: “I always give thanks, because I believe He has a plan for each of us. If I am here today, it’s thanks to Him.” While acknowledging that he acts on the pitch himself, he believes God guides moments and purpose beyond what is visible.
Asked about discussing faith in a diverse locker room, Giroud said debates do happen but emphasized respect: “Always with respect.” He acknowledged that footballers face temptations and make mistakes, but stressed that repentance is central to his Christian life: “The most important thing is to repent. God heals and forgives.”
When questioned about criticism and mockery — including jokes about not scoring during the World Cup — Giroud said forgiveness is essential: “Of course I forgive.” For him, faith provides peace, perspective, and humility, grounding his identity beyond goals, trophies, or public opinion.
