A brief encounter at a Florida restaurant turned into a widely shared moment after a college student stopped to pray for a police officer, an act that was later described by those involved as deeply meaningful.
Volusia County Sheriff’s Department Officer Cameron Tucker and his wife, Justine, were having dinner at a Zaxby’s in DeLand, Florida, when they were approached by Juan, an African American college student. Juan asked the officer if he could pray over him “to keep him protected” in his line of duty.
The couple agreed. Juan placed his hand on Tucker’s shoulder and prayed for his safety.
Justine Tucker later shared the moment on Facebook, writing, “After crying my eyes out, we got to have an amazing conversation with this gentleman.” She added, “He was on fire for God and you could feel His presence in the room. He said that he felt compelled to talk to us and to pray over Cameron.”
Juan is a football player at Stetson University and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. His grandmother, Berta O’Neil, said she was extremely proud of her grandson and said the moment showed “how powerful a young person’s actions can be.”
According to those involved, the encounter did not end there. Since that day, Juan and Officer Tucker have stayed in contact, connected by a moment that began with a simple request to pray.
