Resurrection Epic Heads to the Big Screen

“Mel Gibson’s Sequel to The Passion of the Christ

The Resurrection of the Christ is set to start filming in August at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios, with Jim Caviezel reprising his role as Jesus (reportedly digitally de-aged). The film explores the days between the Crucifixion and Easter morning in a non-linear, supernatural-tinged narrative.

Release: Lionsgate will release the story in two parts—Part One on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, and Part Two on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027. Returning characters include Mary and Peter, with a script developed alongside Randall Wallace and large-scale production aimed at creating a landmark faith epic.

Why it matters:

Highlights the Resurrection—the pivotal moment of the Gospel.

Offers a fresh perspective on the three days between the Cross and the Empty Tomb.

Puts Jesus front-and-center in a major studio release, sparking mainstream engagement.”
