Rubio Applauded in Munich for Linking Western Unity to Christian Roots

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio received sustained applause at the Munich Security Conference after declaring that Western civilization is deeply rooted in Christian faith and shared heritage, while urging stronger border controls and national sovereignty.

“For the United States and Europe, we belong together,” Rubio said. “We are part of one civilization — Western civilization. We are bound to one another by … shared history, Christian faith, culture, heritage, language, ancestry, and the sacrifices our forefathers made together.”

Rubio argued that post-Cold War ideas promoting borderless commerce and migration have produced strategic and social instability. He described border control as a “core duty” of governments and warned that large-scale migration threatens “cultural continuity and public cohesion” in both the United States and Europe.

Addressing global conflicts, including Ukraine and Gaza, Rubio said international institutions often produce “strongly worded resolutions” but fail to deliver decisive outcomes. “We do not live in a perfect world,” he said, cautioning against allowing adversaries to “shield themselves behind abstractions of international law.”

He also emphasized rebuilding domestic industry, securing supply chains and coordinating Western efforts in critical minerals, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. Rubio linked sovereignty not only to border security but also to economic resilience and defense readiness.

On Russia, Rubio said sanctions remain in place and that the U.S. is testing Moscow’s seriousness about ending the war in Ukraine. He added that India had committed to halting further purchases of Russian oil.

Throughout his speech, Rubio framed American and European security as inseparable, grounded in what he called a shared civilizational inheritance shaped in large part by Christianity.
