Jonathan Roumie says his new Angel Studios film Solo Mio is “saving the rom-com” by restoring family-friendly storytelling, emotional depth, and meaningful male friendship to the big screen. The PG-rated film, opening nationwide Feb. 6, follows an art teacher left at the altar in Rome who stays for his honeymoon and forms unexpected bonds with two fellow travelers, one of whom is played by Roumie.
Roumie said the film is meant to be experienced in theaters, where people can share “the joy and the pain and the gasps and the shock” together, rather than watching alone on personal devices. Set in Italy, Solo Mio blends humor with vulnerability, centering on men who recognize one another as “a brother in need,” even while clashing over how to help.
A professing Catholic, Roumie emphasized that the film intentionally highlights healthy masculinity and emotional openness. “I think the notion of masculinity as a positive trait is something that’s been kind of lost to the culture,” he said, adding that true masculinity includes strength, tenderness, love, and openness. He noted that this same response has emerged from audiences of The Chosen, where many viewers describe seeing Jesus as both strong and emotionally present.
At the heart of Solo Mio is communication, vulnerability, and the courage to face disappointment and hope again. Roumie said the story reflects a broader truth about life and faith: “It’s never too late to find true love… it’s never too late in life to do anything if you have the right support system and you commit a sense of faith to that.”
He added that the film resonates across ages and cultures, surprising even men who assumed they wouldn’t enjoy a romantic comedy. “They connected to guys being guys, trying to talk about their feelings,” Roumie said, describing audience reactions marked by laughter, reflection, and joy. He believes Solo Mio succeeds because it is “wholesome,” emotionally honest, and rooted in shared human experience.
