Teacher Killed in Oyo School Attacks Sparks Protests

A Nigerian Christian math teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was murdered after the abduction of several teachers and students during a planned attack on three schools in the Oyo state by armed men on May 15. Local sources report that the assailants took the victims on the back of their motorbikes and drove into nearby forests.

Within a few days, a video appeared online depicting the apparent beheading of Oyedokun. The imagery ignited protests in Ogbomoso where major roads were blocked by teachers, students and community members calling for increased security for schools and outlying communities.

Oyedokun is described by those who knew him as being a devoted Christian and teacher who faithfully served his community. Civil society groups and church leaders are demanding the release of the victims still held captive and the arrest of those responsible.

Lord Jesus, our place of refuge in times of trouble, we are thankful that our brother, Oyedokun, is with You now. But our hearts break with the constant violence and unrest in Nigeria that has Christians in the center of the bullseye for attack. We ask You to miraculously spare the students and remaining teachers being held captive by violent men. May their attackers be found and held accountable for their crimes, and ultimately find You as their Lord and Savior.

“Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his faithful servants.”—Psalm 116:15
