Teen Swims for Hours to Save Family After Kayak Disaster

A 13-year-old Australian boy recounted how he swam for hours through cold, dangerous waters to save his mother and siblings after they were swept out to sea while kayaking. Ordered by his mother to get help as their kayak filled with water, the boy knew the distance to shore was long, but said he felt compelled to keep going. “I just said, all right, not today, not today, not today. I have to keep on going,” he recalled, adding that he could not feel how tired he was during the swim.

As waves grew large and he swam without a life jacket, he said he tried to keep his mind focused on positive thoughts, even recalling childhood images to push away fear. He alternated between breaststroke, freestyle, and survival backstroke, explaining, “I just keep swimming, just keep swimming.” After finally reaching shore and collapsing on the beach, he ran another two kilometers to find a phone and calmly called emergency services, requesting helicopters, planes, and boats to rescue his family.

During the ordeal, the boy admitted he felt guilt and fear, believing at one point his family might already be dead. He said his faith sustained him throughout the swim. “I don’t think it was actually me. It was God the whole time,” he said. “I kept on praying.” He shared that he promised God he would get baptized and later went to church in gratitude.

His mother described the agonizing decision to send her son for help, saying she chose him because he was the strongest. She later called his actions “incredible,” adding, “He saved your lives.” She said she was overwhelmed with pride and gratitude, describing her son as courageous and saying the family believed his survival and strength were nothing short of extraordinary.
