TobyMac Returns to Scripture After Son’s Death

“Grammy-winning Christian artist TobyMac shared that after the death of his son Truett in 2019, he stepped away from reading the Bible for a season, admitting he “didn’t really have the heart to keep reading.” He told concertgoers he had been reading Scripture from Genesis to Revelation when tragedy struck his family, and that grief even led him to skip mornings he once devoted to God’s Word.

TobyMac said he later sensed God inviting him back. “I looked up at God and told Him, ‘I’m going to give You a chance,’” he recalled. As he returned to Scripture, he said he was reminded that relationship requires communication—explaining that God speaks through His Word, while prayer is how believers speak to Him.

Reflecting on his pain, TobyMac said the promise he has held onto is that God “will never leave us or forsake us.” He acknowledged that God may not change what happened or erase the loss, but emphasized, “He doesn’t go away.” Speaking to those who are hurting, he added, “No matter how much pain you’re in tonight, if you have a relationship with God, He’s there. He remains faithful.”

TobyMac also revealed that his song “Cornerstone” emerged from the days surrounding his son’s funeral. He recalled telling his family, “We have to rebuild,” choosing to rebuild not on comfort or financial security, but on Christ. “As for me and my house,” he said, “we will build on the Rock. We will build on the promises of God. We will build on the Cornerstone.””
