Trump Calls for National Prayer Event on the Mall

Speaking at the 74th annual National Prayer Breakfast, President Donald Trump emphasized faith as essential to national strength, saying, “To be a great nation…you have to have religion. You have to have faith. You have to have God.” He pointed to what he described as a resurgence of faith across the U.S., noting some churches are seeing “30 percent, 50 percent, or even 70 percent” growth in attendance and conversions. Trump announced a national prayer event on May 17, 2026, on the National Mall to “rededicate America as one nation under God,” ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary. He also said the Department of Education is issuing new guidance to protect prayer in public schools, stating, “Prayer strengthens, prayer heals…prayer is America’s superpower.” The speech followed additional prayer gatherings with lawmakers and faith leaders, including Scripture-based prayers for national repentance and healing.
