Trump Challenges Congress on Immigration Duty

During President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, he invited members of Congress to publicly affirm a key immigration principle.

“If you agree with this statement, then stand up and show your support: The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens,” Trump said from the House chamber.

Following the remark, nearly no Democrats stood or applauded, highlighting the sharp partisan divide over immigration policy and border enforcement.

Trump immediately responded from the podium, saying, “Isn’t that a shame? You should be ashamed of yourself not standing up.” He then renewed his call to “end deadly sanctuary cities that protect the criminals” and to impose “serious penalties for public officials who block the removal of criminal aliens.”
