Walking by the Spirit

THE FLESH WANTS

This one is personal because every believer knows this battle.

The flesh does not always show up looking obvious.

Sometimes it looks like anger you feel justified holding onto.

Sometimes it looks like a desire you keep feeding while telling yourself you can stop whenever you want.

Sometimes it looks like needing attention, needing control, needing the last word, needing people to see you, praise you, choose you, validate you, or agree with you.

Galatians 5 tells us the works of the flesh are obvious, but a lot of people have gotten very good at making them look normal.

The flesh wants revenge.

It wants to make them feel what they made you feel.

It wants to post the message, send the paragraph, expose the person, win the argument, and call it justice when really it is bitterness looking for permission.

The flesh wants attention.

It wants to be seen so badly that it will trade peace for applause.

It will turn pain into performance.

It will turn obedience into a stage.

It will even use spiritual language to make pride look holy.

The flesh wants comfort.

Not rest.

Comfort.

There is a difference.

Rest is from God.

Comfort becomes dangerous when it starts telling you to avoid obedience because obedience feels hard.

The flesh wants control.

It wants to know every outcome.

It wants to force every door.

It wants to manipulate every situation.

It wants to call anxiety wisdom and call surrender weakness.

The flesh wants pleasure.

Not all pleasure is sin, but the flesh wants pleasure without boundaries, without holiness, without conviction, and without consequences.

It wants what feels good now, even if it costs your soul later.

The flesh wants approval.

It wants people to like you more than it wants God to be pleased with you.

It wants you to stay quiet when truth should be spoken.

It wants you to compromise so you can belong.

It wants you to fear rejection more than disobedience.

And the flesh wants self worship.

That is really what it all comes down to.

My will.

My desire.

My feelings.

My timing.

My image.

My truth.

My way.

This is why Scripture tells us to walk by the Spirit.

Because you cannot defeat the flesh by simply trying harder in your own strength.

You need the Holy Spirit.

You need conviction.

You need surrender.

You need repentance.

You need discipline.

You need to stop making peace with the part of you Jesus died to set you free from.

The flesh will always promise freedom while slowly making you a slave.

But the Spirit leads you into life.

So the question is not, “Do I feel tempted?”

Every person does.

The question is, “Who is leading me?”

Because whatever you feed gets stronger.

And whatever you surrender to begins to shape you.
