Bexar County Judge Resigns After Misconduct Case, Lifetime Ban Issued

Rosie Speedlin-Gonzalez, the first openly LGBT-identified judge in Bexar County, has resigned and accepted a lifetime ban from judicial service following multiple misconduct complaints tied to a controversial courtroom incident.

The case stemmed from a heated 2024 hearing where she allegedly ordered defense attorney Elizabeth Russell to be handcuffed and placed in the jury box, telling a bailiff, “Take her into custody and put her in the box.”

While prosecutors later moved to dismiss the criminal charges “in the interest of justice,” Texas judicial authorities permanently barred her from serving as a judge. The agreement states she “does not admit guilt, fault or liability.”
