Concern Over ICE Detainee Suicides

Reports from the Associated Press this week have raised national concern about the welfare of detainees held in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities. According to the AP investigation, the rate of deaths by suicide among ICE detainees has climbed sharply, with multiple deaths reported in custody so far this year. The investigation has drawn responses from lawmakers, religious leaders, and human rights advocates across the political spectrum, all calling for greater attention to the dignity, mental health care, and pastoral support of those held in federal custody. Every person who has died was a son or daughter, often a parent, often someone fleeing circumstances none of us would choose. Behind every statistic is a face, a name, and a story known fully only to God. Scripture is clear about the value God places on each life. Psalm 139:13-14 says, For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. No human being, no matter their legal status, immigration record, or circumstance, is invisible to the God who formed them. Psalm 34:18 reminds us that the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. The Church is not silent in moments like this. The Church kneels. We pray for those in custody and for those who care for them. We pray for wisdom for the leaders charged with their welfare. And we pray that no one in this nation, no matter how alone they feel, ever forgets they are loved by the God who made them.
