Congressional Seat Changes Hands in Houston

A 21-year career in the United States Congress came to an end on Tuesday night in Houston. Democratic Rep. Al Green, 78, lost his primary runoff to fellow Democratic Rep. Christian Menefee, 37, in the newly redrawn Texas 18th Congressional District. Menefee captured roughly 69 percent of the vote, ending Green’s two-decade tenure in the House. The race was the result of a GOP-led redistricting in Texas that absorbed parts of Green’s former 9th District into the redrawn 18th, forcing two sitting Democrats into the same contest. The loss closes one of the longest active runs in the Texas delegation, a career that included multiple high-profile clashes with President Trump, repeated impeachment efforts, and an ejection from this year’s State of the Union address. Menefee, the former Harris County Attorney, becomes the heavy favorite to win the deep-blue seat in November. The deeper truth under every election night is one Scripture has been telling for thousands of years. No seat held by a man lasts forever, no matter how long he sits in it. Power moves. Generations turn. Names that once filled headlines step quietly off the stage while new ones step on. The Bible never flatters that process. It tells the truth about it. “He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.” — Daniel 2:21. Every leader in every chair will one day be replaced. The only question is whether the years served were spent building something that outlasts the title.
