“I’m a son of Jesus Christ before I’m a football player,” Chiefs rookie quarterback Garrett Nussmeier told reporters.
The Kansas City seventh-round draft pick made the statement while speaking about the injury and challenges he faced during his final season at LSU. Nussmeier said his faith is “a big part” of who he is and that he believes what he went through was “meant to be.”
He also said the struggle helped him grow into “a better player, a better person, a better man.” After being drafted by the Chiefs, Nussmeier pointed to Proverbs 3:5-6, a Bible passage about trusting the Lord rather than leaning on one’s own understanding.
