Faith Protected at Federal Workplaces

The cross at the desk. The Bible in the break room. The prayer with a coworker on lunch. All of it is now formally protected for federal employees by official policy.

Under the Trump administration, the Office of Personnel Management issued a memo titled “Protecting Religious Expression in the Federal Workplace” that has been actively reshaping how faith is treated across the federal government. The guidance, signed by OPM Director Scott Kupor and sent to every federal department and agency head, makes clear that federal employees can display Bibles, crosses, crucifixes, rosaries, mezuzahs, tefillin, and religious artwork at their desks and on their person. They can wear cross necklaces or shirts with religious messages. They can pray during breaks. They can form Bible studies and prayer groups in the office while off duty. They can have voluntary conversations about their beliefs with coworkers, even to persuade, as long as the conversation never crosses into harassment.

“Federal employees should never have to choose between their faith and their career,” Kupor said in a statement accompanying the memo. The five-category guidance is intentionally broad, covering Christians, Jews, Muslims, and people of every faith, signaling that the answer to one religion being silenced was never to silence them all.

For decades, federal workers quietly stashed their Bibles in drawers and removed crosses before walking through the door. They prayed in their cars on lunch breaks. They learned to keep the deepest part of who they were invisible at work. That season is closing.

Scripture speaks plainly to the moment. “Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.” — Matthew 5:15

A faith that has to hide is not really free. A nation that asks its citizens to leave God at the parking lot has forgotten what liberty was for. The Bible on the desk is small. The meaning behind it is anything but.
