George Washington on God and Providence

While he was president, George Washington referred to “God” at least 146 times and “Providence” over 270 times. He also referred to God as “the Great Author of the Universe,” “the Almighty Ruler,” and the “Almighty Being.”

At one point, he encouraged the Delaware Indian Chiefs to choose to follow Jesus. He wrote: “You do well to wish to learn our arts and ways of life, and above all, the religion of Jesus Christ.”

Here’s an example about America’s need for God, which he wrote as he was preparing to leave the White House after his second term in office:

“That Beneficent Providence, which, hitherto, has preserved us in Peace, and increased our prosperity, will not, I trust, withdraw its protecting hand; while we, on our part, endeavour to merit a continuance of its favors.” – George Washington’s Letter to the Inhabitants of Shepherds Town and Its Vicinity, October 12, 1796
