God, Government, and the Rule of Law

The debate over ICE agents at courthouses has consumed Washington for months. Critics call it intimidation. Supporters call it law enforcement doing its job. But there is a question that almost nobody is asking — what does God say about the rule of law? The Bible is not silent on this. Romans 13 makes clear that governing authorities are established by God and that those who resist lawful authority resist the ordinance of God. That is not a political statement. That is Scripture. A nation without borders is not a nation. A law that is only enforced selectively is not a law at all. If someone entered this country in violation of federal law, a courthouse is not a sanctuary from the legal consequences of that choice. Every sovereign nation has not only the right but the responsibility to enforce its own laws. That is not cruelty. That is order. And order, according to the Word of God, is a reflection of His character.
