Immigration, Welfare, and Birthright Citizenship Debate

A sitting U.S. Senator just put two of the most contested immigration questions in America on the Senate floor in the same season. Rand Paul of Kentucky introduced the End Welfare for Non-Citizens Act in late 2025, a bill to block federal benefit programs including TANF, Medicaid, and SNAP from funding refugees, asylees, and people in the country illegally. In April 2026 he followed it with a proposed constitutional amendment to end birthright citizenship, arguing the 14th Amendment has been read more broadly than its authors intended. Paul framed both efforts around a country he says is now $38 trillion in debt and has, in his words, had its generosity exploited too often. Supporters call it overdue stewardship of finite resources. Opponents argue the proposals punish vulnerable people and rewrite a constitutional guarantee. Both sides agree on one thing. The country cannot keep promising what it cannot deliver, and pretending it can is its own form of dishonesty. The Bible does not give a tax code or an immigration policy, but it does give a standard for how a people are supposed to handle resources and strangers at the same time. “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.” — Proverbs 21:5. A nation cannot love its neighbor by going broke, and it cannot care for the stranger by neglecting the citizen. Wisdom holds both at once.
