Karen Whitsett, a Democrat serving in the Michigan House, announced she will not seek reelection and plans to step away from politics entirely—saying the decision comes down to her Christian faith.
Whitsett, who represents part of Detroit, said she can no longer reconcile the Democratic Party’s platform with Scripture.
“For me, it is impossible to be a faithful follower of Jesus Christ while remaining a member of the Democratic Party as it exists today,” she said, pointing to issues like abortion and debates surrounding gender and marriage.
Whitsett also spoke candidly about her spiritual journey.
“I compromised my relationship with Jesus for too long. I’m grateful God didn’t give up on me. He gave me time to repent, turn, and be fully devoted to Him.”
She made clear the decision was not political strategy.
“I will not be seeking re-election, and I will not run for office again. This is not a political calculation — it’s a spiritual decision.”
After facing criticism for her announcement, Whitsett said her focus remains on obedience to God rather than public approval.
“Those who understand, understand. Those who don’t, don’t. At the end of the day, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess. My responsibility is to walk in truth and obedience.”
“I answer to God first.”
