Paid Seat, Public Trial

She paid for her seat, sat in her seat, and lost almost everything she had built for the simple act of staying in it.
Brazilian bank employee Jeniffer Castro, 29, was filmed without her consent on a December 4, 2024 GOL Airlines flight from Rio de Janeiro to Belo Horizonte after refusing to give up her pre-selected window seat to a crying child she had found sitting there when she boarded. The video went viral worldwide, and Castro says the resulting backlash forced her to leave her banking career as online attacks consumed her life. She has now filed lawsuits against both GOL Airlines, for failing to intervene when she was being harassed and filmed, and the passenger who recorded and posted the clip without her permission. Castro has stated the lawsuit is not directed at the child or the child’s mother. Her social media following has since climbed past 2.1 million as she rebuilds under public scrutiny.
A grown woman exercised a basic right, refused to surrender what she had paid for, and an entire internet appointed itself her judge inside of an afternoon. The crowd never asked questions. It never paused. It rendered a verdict and went looking for the next stranger to tear down.
Matthew 7:1-2 says, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
The court of public opinion has no rules of evidence, no presumption of innocence, and no appeal. But heaven keeps a different record.
