Quiet Courage in Butler

The Pennsylvania police officer credited with potentially saving President Donald Trump’s life during the July 13, 2024 assassination attempt in Butler has been named the National Rifle Association’s 2025 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. Sergeant Aaron Zaliponi of the Adams Township Police Department was serving as counter assault team leader for the Butler County Emergency Service Unit when 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire from an agricultural building rooftop at the Butler Farm Show grounds. Zaliponi located the gunman lying prone on the roof and engaged him with a single rifle shot from approximately 115 yards away. Investigators believe his round struck the buttstock of the shooter’s rifle, causing it to shatter and delaying the gunman’s next move long enough for a Secret Service counter-sniper to fire the fatal shot. The would-be assassin never fired another round after Zaliponi’s shot. One rally attendee, firefighter and father Corey Comperatore, was killed while shielding his family. Two other men were critically wounded. Zaliponi, an NRA Benefactor Member and Certified Law Enforcement Patrol Rifle Instructor, did not seek attention for what he did.
