Filming has officially wrapped on Mel Gibson’s long-awaited sequel, “The Resurrection of the Christ,” marking a major step forward for the follow-up to The Passion of the Christ.
The two-part film is set for release in 2027, with Part One arriving on Good Friday, March 26, and Part Two on Ascension Day, May 6. Unlike the 2004 original, the sequel features a new cast, with Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen replacing Jim Caviezel as Jesus.
Gibson has described the project as more than a straightforward Gospel retelling, exploring themes like Hell, Sheol, fallen angels and Satan’s origin. He once called the script “an acid trip,” suggesting the film may take a more dramatic and theological approach.
Reflecting on faith and redemption, Gibson said, “We’re broken, and we need help,” adding that humility begins when people acknowledge “there is something better than you.” He also encouraged younger generations to hold on to their convictions, even when “life’s hard” and “we’ve all got a boulder we’re dragging.”
