A sitting United States senator stood on a public stage and said the words most politicians spend their entire careers carefully avoiding.
Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri declared that America was founded on the gospel of Jesus Christ, pointing to the convictions of the early settlers, the language of the founding documents, and the faith of the men who shaped the country’s earliest institutions. The statement drew immediate praise from Christians and immediate fire from secular critics demanding he walk it back. He has not.
Hawley has been one of the most outspoken voices in Washington on the connection between Christianity and the moral foundations of the republic. He argues that the freedoms Americans enjoy did not arrive in a vacuum, that ideas like equal dignity, individual rights, and limited government grew out of a Christian worldview before they were ever written into law.
The historical record makes the case hard to dismiss. The Mayflower Compact opens with the words “In the name of God, Amen.” The Declaration of Independence appeals directly to a Creator. Schools, hospitals, and universities across the country were founded by Christians acting on the conviction that human beings carry inherent worth because they are made in the image of God.
This isn’t about turning America into a theocracy. It is about telling the truth about where the country came from. A nation that forgets its foundation eventually loses the building. Hawley’s willingness to say so out loud, in a culture that punishes that kind of clarity, is becoming rarer by the year.
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance.” — Psalm 33:12
Christians don’t have to apologize for their fingerprints on American history. The faith that built the orphanages, abolished slavery, opened the hospitals, and translated the Constitution into protected rights for ordinary citizens is the same faith pointing the way forward today.
Truth doesn’t need a permission slip. It just needs someone willing to say it.
What does it mean for the country when a sitting senator refuses to apologize for naming the source of America’s founding ideals? #jesus #usa #truth
