Stewardship and Citizenship: Schwarzenegger’s Message

A man who came to this country with nothing in his pocket but a duffel bag and a dream just said something that millions of people needed to hear, and he said it on national television without flinching. Arnold Schwarzenegger sat on The View and told the host plainly that immigrants in America have to do things the legal way, behave like guests in someone else’s house, and give something back to the country that opened the door for them. He should know. He arrived in 1968 from a small town in Austria, became a citizen in 1983, served two terms as the governor of California, and is now scheduled to give the 250th anniversary speech at George Washington’s Mount Vernon on the Fourth of July. This is not the voice of a man hostile to immigration. This is the voice of an immigrant who actually lived the American story the right way and is now begging the next generation to honor the same path. The Bible has a word for what he is describing, and the word is stewardship. When God places a person in a home, a job, a marriage, or a nation, He expects that person to honor the gift instead of exploiting it. “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” Romans 13:1. That verse is not popular in a culture that wants every rule bent around personal preference, but it is still the truth. Honoring the laws of the land you walked into is not weakness. It is gratitude wearing work boots. A guest who tears up the host’s home is not bold. He is ungrateful. And gratitude is one of the most overlooked spiritual disciplines in the modern world. Schwarzenegger’s words land harder coming from him because he is living proof that the legal road actually leads somewhere. Honor the country you enter. Bless the place that blesses you. Pay back what was given to you. That is not a political statement. That is the gospel of the steward, lived out in plain sight. What would change in America if every person inside its borders, native-born or new arrival, treated this country like a gift entrusted by God instead of a resource to be drained? #celebrity #america
