A bill that has bounced around Washington for nearly a decade just took its biggest step forward in years. The House Energy and Commerce Committee voted 48 to 1 last Thursday to advance the Sunshine Protection Act, the legislation that would end the twice-yearly clock change and lock the country into daylight saving time year round. The bill, originally introduced by Senator Rick Scott of Florida and Representative Vern Buchanan of Florida, is now attached to a larger transportation package called the Motor Vehicle Modernization Act and heads to the House floor next. President Donald Trump celebrated the committee vote on Truth Social, calling the current system ridiculous and writing that he intends to work very hard to see the bill signed into law. Supporters argue permanent daylight saving time would reduce sleep disruption, lower workplace injuries, and ease traffic accidents in the days following clock changes. Critics, including Senator Tom Cotton, warn that locking the clock forward would mean schoolchildren walking to bus stops in darkness through much of the winter. Hawaii and most of Arizona already skip the change altogether. Whatever a person thinks about the bill, the conversation underneath it is older than Congress. Psalm 90:12 says, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Time is the one resource no human being can manufacture. Washington can legislate how a clock reads. It cannot add a single second to the life of the person watching it. Maybe the deeper question is not whether to spring forward or fall back, but whether the time we already have is being spent on what matters most. Where would you stand if this bill landed on your desk to sign? #truth #trump #america
