President Donald Trump made history Monday night as the first sitting president to attend an NBA Finals game, taking his seat at Madison Square Garden in New York City for Game 3 between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs.
Trump watched from Knicks owner James Dolan’s private suite alongside his granddaughter Kai, Cabinet secretaries Lee Zeldin, Sean Duffy, and Doug Burgum, and personal adviser Boris Epshteyn. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver noted that Trump was invited by Dolan and called him a genuine, longtime Knicks fan — one who used to hold courtside seats and attended the draft regularly.
When the president appeared on the arena’s jumbo screen during the national anthem, the building broke into “USA! USA!” chants. As the evening progressed and the New York Fire Department was recognized on the court, another wave of patriotic chants filled the arena. Trump pumped his fist in response.
The Knicks were hosting their first NBA Finals game in 27 years, and security at the arena was significantly heightened for the president’s visit. After the game, Trump told reporters it was “mostly cheers” and described the atmosphere as “loud and very enthusiastic.”
The New York Knicks have not won an NBA championship since 1973. For a city that has waited over five decades, the Finals return itself is a moment.
