When God gave Israel instructions for the Passover lamb, He included a detail that seems small, but was deeply prophetic.
“You shall not break any of its bones.” (Exodus 12:46)
At first glance, it sounds like a random rule.
It wasn’t. The Passover lamb had to be perfect, spotless, and unbroken. Its bones were not to be crushed, fractured, or damaged.
Fast forward to the crucifixion of Jesus. Roman soldiers routinely broke the legs of those being crucified to hasten death. But when they came to Jesus, they found He was already dead so they did not break His legs.
John makes sure we don’t miss it:
“These things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: ‘Not one of His bones will be broken.’” (John 19:36)
Jesus wasn’t spared by chance. He was fulfilling prophecy. The Lamb of God died exactly as the Passover lamb was prescribed—sacrificed, spotless, and unbroken. Even in death, Jesus fulfilled the Law down to the smallest detail—even the bones of the Lamb preached the gospel.
