Amy Grant’s New Song Reflects on Jan. 6 and 1960s Idealism

Amy Grant has released a new single, “The 6th of January (Yasgur’s Farm),” reflecting on whether the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot marked the symbolic end of the idealism associated with the 1960s counterculture.

The song looks back to Woodstock Music and Art Fair, repeatedly asking, “Where’s the road to Yasgur’s farm?”—a reference to the New York site where Woodstock took place in 1969.

The track also references Marvin Gaye and draws on the legacy of John Lennon’s song “Imagine,” lamenting the loss of unity once imagined in that era.

Grant has described “unrest” as a central theme, saying it invites people to ask what they can control and how they can choose differently in a divided world.

While some listeners welcomed the song’s reflective tone, it also sparked criticism from conservative Christian voices, who argued that its positive references to Woodstock and “Imagine” conflict with Christian beliefs.

Pastors and commentators accused Grant of drifting from her evangelical base, pointing as well to her public defense of hosting her niece’s same-sex wedding in 2023.
