Vances Share How They Navigate Interfaith Marriage

Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance are opening up about how they navigate a marriage shaped by two different faith traditions.

JD, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, has publicly said he hopes his wife will one day be moved by the Christian gospel as he was. But Usha, who was raised Hindu, said the idea that her husband is constantly trying to convert her has been misunderstood. “It’s not like he’s proselytizing to me every day,” she explained.

JD said his Christian faith leads him to believe the gospel is true and good for people, but he also recognizes that faith cannot be forced. “God says everybody has free will,” he previously said, adding that he will continue to love and support his wife whether or not she ever shares his beliefs.

Reflecting on his own journey, JD said Christianity gave him the stability and rootedness he had been searching for after a childhood marked by family upheaval. Their story has now renewed discussion about faith, marriage, evangelism, and how Christian conviction can coexist with love and patience inside an interfaith home.
