While promoting Hallmark’s ‘The Way Home’, Andie MacDowell reflected on the steady influence of faith in her life.
Raised in the Episcopal Church, she grew up in a family shaped by Christian practice. Her mother played the organ at church, her great-grandfather was an Episcopal minister, and her grandmother “prayed every night on her knees.” The family always said a blessing before meals — “a great way to start a meal… and be grateful.”
She remembers church as “non-judgmental… very loving and kind,” a place where people would “share the peace.” For her, it felt “comforting… like a meditation and a family.”
Prayer remains central today. “I pray. I do pray,” she says, adding that walking in nature feels like prayer because it is “God’s gift… a masterpiece.” Even without focusing heavily on Heaven or Hell, she says, “I just feel safe in whatever it is that holds me safe,” and believes faith should teach people “to be good companions for each other.”
She prayed the Lord’s Prayer nightly with her children and still loves Psalm 23, calling it “a beautiful Psalm.” Though not currently attending church regularly, her faith continues to be expressed through prayer, gratitude, and trust in God’s presence.
