Brazilian Student Faces Prison Over Gender Identity Posts

A Brazilian veterinary student, Isadora Borges, appeared before a federal court this week as she faces up to 10 years in prison over social media posts about gender identity.

The case centers on two 2020 posts on X in which Borges wrote that transgender women were “obviously born male” and argued that biology is not changed by surgery or hormones.

After a complaint from Brazilian politician Erika Hilton, who identifies as transgender, federal authorities charged Borges with two counts of transphobia, each carrying a possible two- to five-year sentence.
