Carrie Underwood Tearfully Reacts to Postpartum Song on American Idol

Country star Carrie Underwood was moved to tears after American Idol contestant Hannah Harper performed an emotional original song about postpartum depression and finding strength in the Lord.

Harper, a mother of three boys, shared that she experienced postpartum depression following the birth of her youngest child. In the audition clip, she recalled a moment of complete exhaustion and despair as all her children were crying at once.

“I remember being on the couch… all I wanted was to be a mom, and I couldn’t do it,” Harper said. “I was praying that the Lord would calm my spirit. I got up off my couch, and I wrote this song.”

Her emotional performance of “String Cheese” moved the judges — Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Underwood — with Underwood seen wiping away tears. The former American Idol champion called Harper’s song “about the most relatable” she had ever heard.
