Jim Caviezel was warned by Mel Gibson that playing Jesus in The Passion of the Christ would be “very difficult” and could cost him his career. Still, he chose to do it, saying, “I think we have to make it, even if it is difficult.”
The role came with intense suffering—he lost 45 pounds, was struck by lightning, injured during filming, and later needed heart surgeries. Yet his focus never changed: “I didn’t want people to see me. I just want them to see Jesus.”
The impact went beyond the screen. One actor said Caviezel’s eyes showed “only mercy and love,” while another, once an atheist, later converted to Christianity.
Despite studios refusing it, Gibson funded the film himself—and it became a global success, reaching “hundreds of millions” and transforming lives, including Caviezel’s own faith journey.
