Chandler Warns Against Political Idolatry in the Church

Matt Chandler warned that one of the most dangerous spiritual threats facing the modern Church is political idolatry.

Looking ahead, he said believers may one day look back on this era “with maybe some embarrassment and shame” because of how deeply politics has shaped Christian identity and divided the Church. “The political idolatry and ideology today, I think it’s just killing us,” Chandler said.

Rather than placing ultimate hope in parties, leaders, or cultural victories, Chandler argued that Christians must return their loyalty to Christ above all else.

He suggested many believers have allowed political ideology to become “subversive” in how it influences their faith, relationships, and witness. In his view, reform is needed—not only in doctrine and discipleship, but in how the Church relates to power and politics.

As many churches continue wrestling with polarization, culture wars, and partisan division. Chandler’s warning was clear: whenever politics becomes central and Jesus becomes secondary, the Church loses something vital.
