As Congress considers a nationwide ban on transgender procedures for minors, former trans teen Chloe Cole told a Senate committee that children are being subjected to irreversible medical interventions long before they are able to understand the consequences.
Cole said she began trying to transition at age 12 and underwent a double mastectomy at 15. One year later, she said, she realized it had been a devastating mistake. Telling lawmakers that the peace and self-acceptance she was promised never came, she urged Congress to stop other children from following the same path.
Her testimony added emotional force to the national debate over puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries for minors. Cole also warned that many parents are pushed toward transition by the fear that refusing it will lead their child to suicide.
