Nearly a decade after “Reckless Love,” Cory Asbury is opening up about a season of walking away from his calling—and being drawn back by God.
He admitted he was “running from my calling,” frustrated with the worship music industry and uneasy that “making money from worship music… felt weird in my soul.”
The tension, combined with what he described as “the dirtiness of the industry” and “sin… rampant,” left him “cynical and jaded,” even considering quitting altogether.
Asbury had already accepted a $500,000 advance to make a country album and was ready to leave Christian music behind. “I just ran, ran as far as I could,” he said.
But in a sudden moment, he felt God speak: “Be done. Stop running… move on to what you were created to do.” Convicted, he made the difficult decision to return the money and scrap the album entirely.
Reflecting on his heart during that time, he admitted, “I was kind of doing Saul’s work… on my high horse,” realizing he had become prideful and critical.
Now, Asbury is preparing to release a new worship album, describing it as a return to “youth and zeal”—a simple, passionate love for God. He hopes those who feel burned out can hear it and believe, “there’s hope for me.”
