Dennis Quaid Credits Faith for Sobriety and Joy

Actor Dennis Quaid says his Christian faith played a crucial role in helping him overcome addiction and rediscover joy in life.

Reflecting on his past struggles with drugs, Quaid recalled a powerful moment when he experienced what he described as a “white light experience,” realizing he could end up “dead or in jail or losing everything.” That moment pushed him to seek change.

Quaid said addiction often tries to “fill a hole inside us,” but after leaving addiction behind, people must find something deeper to replace it. For him, that was returning to faith. Although he grew up in a Baptist church, he said it wasn’t until later that he began developing a personal relationship with God.

As part of that spiritual journey, he began reading the Bible again and wrote a faith-inspired song, “On My Way to Heaven,” to reassure his mother that he was recovering. Today, Quaid continues expressing his faith through music, including his gospel album “Fallen: A Gospel Record For Sinners.”

Looking back, Quaid says the true source of joy in life is ultimately found in “the relationship with God that we all have,” explaining that his sobriety came from returning to that spiritual foundation.
