Elizabeth Tabish Shares How The Chosen Changed Her Life

Elizabeth Tabish, who plays Mary Magdalene in “The Chosen,” almost didn’t land the role that would profoundly shape her life. Before joining the hit series, the 35-year-old actress was living in Austin, Texas, struggling financially and battling depression, believing her acting dream was “dead.” At the same time, she wrestled with skepticism about faith and God.

Though initially doubtful, Tabish says working on the show has slowly transformed her heart. “It’s been really hard to ignore that there’s something really special about this experience for me,” she said, reflecting on how portraying Mary — especially the brokenness represented in the “Lilith” storyline — connected deeply with her own painful experiences. Over time, she began to sense God’s presence in her journey: “God has been there the whole time… God’s love is real. It’s a real thing and I’ve been slowly opening up to it.”

Through playing Mary Magdalene, Tabish has also gained a deeper appreciation for Jesus’ ministry, especially His treatment of women. “Jesus elevated women, period,” she said, noting how the show honestly portrays the full spectrum of female experiences — pain, trauma, joy, and growth.

More than just a role, Mary Magdalene has become a teacher to Tabish. She says the character reminds her that “you’re always still loved, no matter what,” and that life is about growth, not perfection. “You don’t have to change the world, but you can change yourself.”
