Faith-Centered Commencement at Hillsdale College

Erika Kirk’s commencement speech at Hillsdale College was deeply rooted in faith, offering graduates a powerful reminder that their lives should be centered on God and guided by eternal truth. Speaking as she accepted honorary degrees on behalf of herself and her late husband, Charlie Kirk, she emphasized that Charlie believed his mission was not simply political, but spiritual.

Kirk shared that when Charlie founded Turning Point USA, he had “no money, no connections, and no idea what he was doing,” but he trusted that “what the Lord had put on his heart, that was his calling.” She said God “put a hedge of protection around him” as he built an organization intended to “outlast him.” Charlie saw his work as an effort to “turn a doubting, godless, and defiant nation back to God” and to point young people toward “truth, virtue, and right living.”

One of the most moving moments of the speech came when Erika reflected on the contrast between “human limitation and God’s infinity.” She reminded graduates that life is brief, and because of that, “our choices, even the smallest ones, matter.” She urged them to see responsibility not as a burden but as “a calling meant to ground you.”

At the center of her message was a clear declaration of Christian faith: “At the center of that life, it must be Jesus Christ, always, to love Him and to serve Him, because He is the axis upon which all other priorities turn.” She explained that serving the Lord was the defining priority of her family and “the lens by which everything else flows through.”

Erika also reminded graduates that their duty to pursue truth and defend liberty flows from their identity “as Christians, as Americans, and as graduates of Hillsdale College.” She contrasted the world’s tendency to reshape truth with the Christian calling to honor it. “As Christians, we are in the world, not of it,” she said, urging them not to mirror culture but to live distinctly for God.
