Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has claimed responsibility for killing 15 Christians in a series of coordinated attacks in Adamawa State, northeastern Nigeria.
According to statements released on December 29, ISWAP said its fighters attacked the village of Mondag, killing 11 Christians, burning a church, and destroying around 100 homes. Days earlier, an assault on the village of Timboa on December 26 left four Christians dead, five captured, and about 50 houses burned.
In subsequent social media posts, ISWAP openly threatened Christians, saying their lives would only be spared if they converted to Islam or paid the jizya tax as subjugated people. The group framed the attacks as retaliation for U.S. airstrikes that targeted another Islamic State affiliate in northwestern Nigeria on Christmas Day.
