James Van Der Beek’s Final Message of Faith

The death of James Van Der Beek at 48 has brought renewed attention to a deeply personal message he shared while battling Stage 3 colorectal cancer.

In March 2025, in what he called “the hardest year of my life,” James reflected on identity, mortality, and faith. Once defining himself as an actor, then as a husband and father — “that was the ultimate” — he said cancer forced him to confront who he was when everything else was stripped away.

Unable to work, care for his children, or even handle simple daily tasks, he asked, “If I am just a too-skinny, weak guy alone in an apartment with cancer, what am I?”

After prayer and reflection, he said he found his answer: “I am worthy of God’s love, simply because I exist … And the same is true for you.”

In a later interview, he explained how the illness reshaped his faith: “Before cancer, God was something I tried to fit into my life as much as possible. After cancer, I feel like a connection to God is kind of the whole point of this exercise on this planet.”

His family said he met his final days “with courage, faith, and grace.” Please keep his wife, Kimberly, their six children, and loved ones in prayer.
