Jim Irsay’s Faith-Fueled Leadership

Jim Irsay, longtime owner of the Indianapolis Colts, often spoke openly about how faith shaped both his life and his leadership .

During the Colts’ rise on the national stage, Irsay emphasized humility before God, reminding fans and players that true authority and success do not come from human control. At key moments, he publicly gave glory to God, saying, “As the humble leader of this organization, it’s important to give all glory to God.”

His testimony was rooted in personal struggle. After years of addiction to painkillers, Irsay reached a breaking point that forced him to confront his own limitations. Reflecting on that season, he said, “We don’t control as much as we think we do; it’s God who controls all things.” What many viewed as weakness became the place where his faith deepened and dependence on God became real.

Irsay later rejected the idea of self-sufficiency, calling the concept of a “self-made man” spiritually empty. “We are responsible for the effort,” he said, “God is responsible for the outcome.” That conviction reshaped how he viewed life, business, and leadership.

His faith also influenced major decisions within the organization, including hiring head coach Tony Dungy, a leader known for his own deep Christian convictions. The two shared conversations about faith, suffering, and perseverance while leading at the highest level of professional football.
