Mel Gibson Wraps “Resurrection of the Christ” as Two-Part Epic

Mel Gibson has completed principal photography on his long-awaited two-part sequel to “The Passion of the Christ,” titled “The Resurrection of the Christ.”

Lionsgate and Icon Productions also announced a major release change: Part One will arrive on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027, while Part Two has been delayed to Ascension Day, May 25, 2028.

The sequel comes more than 20 years after the 2004 film became a global blockbuster. Jim Caviezel will not return as Jesus; instead, Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen will portray Christ, after Gibson chose to recast the roles rather than use costly de-aging technology.

Gibson described the project as “far more than a film,” calling it “a mission I’ve carried for over twenty years to tell what I believe is the most important story in human history.” Lionsgate praised the footage, saying “every image we’ve seen from set feels like a masterwork painting brought to life.”
