Mel Gibson says his upcoming sequel to The Passion of the Christ will take audiences somewhere unexpected: hell.
Talking about the long-awaited project, Gibson said the story cannot simply focus on the resurrection itself. “In order to tell the story properly,” he explained, “you have to really start with the fall of the angels.” He added, “You need to go to hell.”
The new films — The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One and The Resurrection of the Christ: Part Two — have officially wrapped filming in Italy and are scheduled for release in 2027.
Gibson previously described parts of the films as “some crazy stuff,” hinting that the sequel will explore spiritual warfare, fallen angels, and the unseen realm behind Christ’s victory over death.
